Yes, its the truth... when I was a freshman in high school I locked myself in my bedroom with a TV and my Super Nintendo and played Final Fantasy 3 (actually sixth in the series in Japan) beginning to end twice. I was a giant nerdy noob.
In addition to playing the game through twice... and this is a sixty hour game so that behavior in itself is rather antisocial and explains a thing or two about my high school experience... I also wrote some fan fiction about it.
The following story I wrote around the age 15, maybe 14... it is an account of the beginning of Final Fantasy 3... my future plan was to write a novel based on every scene in the game... consider that what you are about to read is only the first few minutes of the game and that 60 hours stretch on beyond it. My mom used to call my bedroom the Cave...
My book was going to be called, "The Man at the End of Time"... this was the prologue.
THE MUSIC PLAYED A SOFT, SAD MELODY
Over looking the cliff, smelling the chilly air, the girl felt at peace. Vick`s radio buzzed in her ear, "Lets go girl, we're almost there." Far down below a small town glimmered with the effect of hundreds of sparkling lights. The snow swirled around her Magitek armor. The winter could indeed be felt through the high tek suit. Its presence was uncanny. They began the long trek through the blustering winds and ice. Almost there.
-------------------------------------
Steam swirled around them. The two imperial soldiers and the girl were in Narshe. Wedge and Vicks argued over who should take the lead. They decided to stick her in the point position. With each step accompanied by a metallic clang they rode in. The town looked like a factory. There were furnaces by each house and grates built into the cobble stone streets. Out of the steam that encompassed the entire town stepped three guards and an attack dog. " We don't allow imperial soldiers in here you machine-riding-self-important scum! " screamed one of the guards over the howl of the wind.
Without the slightest hesitation Wedge clicked on his fire beam and roasted them to death. The girl felt the heat pierce her armor. She tried to scream but the slave helmet she wore prevented her. Soon other guards followed and met the same fate. It seemed in no time at all the town square was covered with dead burnt bodies. Terror rose up in the girl. Why, she thought , what did they do to you? The slave crown took over then. She felt numb and followed in silence. They had left the main part of town by now. The girl mindlessly traversed obstacles like wooden bridges and holes in the frozen ground. They were gaining altitude, going farther and farther away from the center of Narshe.
--------------------------------------------------
The two watched from the cave . Three Imperial Magitek machines were said to be running around town toasting anyone they saw. The watchers were an unlikely couple; a moogle and snow beast, but had grown fond of each other and were now friends.A thundering sound ricocheted against the sides of the canyon. The three machines burst into view and moved on by a black noise following them.
The beast, Umaro, grunted his disapproval.
"Why did they come down this way..." Mog started to say as the realization hit him. " Oh my," he started again."The esper." The last two words were barely audible.
-------------------------------
They came to an entrance to a mine shaft. "According to our source the esper was found in a new mine shaft, maybe this one." said Wedge softly over the radio. They entered.
------------------------------
Inside the mine it was pleasant enough. Lanterns cast a warm glow against the walls. As they traversed further they came to a blocked off section. "Stand back everyone," said Wedge. He knocked down the wall.
Inside lay a terrible creature called the Welk.It looked like a hideous snail. Green/yellow slime dripped down its purple shell. Vicks savagely attacked the shell. The creature reacted by creating lightening generated from Vicks beam and sending it straight through his armor.
"Remember our briefing!" screamed Wedge, "Don't attack the shell!"
The girl sent a Magitek missile straight throw the creatures brain. It lay dead in pile of blood bones and slime. Beyond it was the frozen esper.
----------------------------
The girl approached the esper with mild curiosity. What is this thing, she thought, and why do they want it so bad? As she approached it, it began to glow. Soon the whole cave was bathed in its blue light.
Suddenly Vicks and Wedge disappeared. The girl was alone with the esper. Lightening crackled between the two. The girl was bathed in the blue light. A huge explosion followed.
--------------------
Far away Mog looked up with a start. " Oh my," he said "Oh my... "
